“We are the victims of the world’s most comprehensive robbery. Life demands a balance. It’s all right if we do a little robbing now.” ~ Maya Angelou

We have heard millions and millions of stories on heist, robbery, fraud and scams of all levels. We have also heard about various stories of criminals escaping from jails using various innovative techniques. Such stories are very common, in fact they are a very important part of modern day cinema, sometimes the story of the masterminds behind such scenarios help us identify and catch the next possible occurrence. And we at ploy also have covered such stories before:

Scam 2.0 :

Lord of Tunnels:

These mysterious people, the so-called criminal masterminds, dons , gangsters, etc have one more name in common, which again is the most used cinema title especially in bollywood- Most Wanted, though the degree of their cases’ intensity might change. But what if I told you there was a person whom one could easily call the Most wanted out of the most wanted(s) and that he was from India? Interesting isn’t it, come lets check it out then!

By Kaamela Parveen

Wanted in over 100 criminal cases in eight states and sentenced for an incredible 113 years by various courts, out of which he barely served 20 years, made eight daring escapes from various jails and was the ultimate confidence trickster, and even went on to dupe his death, has many movies made about him, one even with Amitabh Bachan as the lead, wow! We start the story off with a sixer! He was none other than Mr Natwarlal- The most wanted !

“Leave me free for an hour and I’ll get thousands and thousands of rupees from the same street where I took money. And the people would give it to me willingly.”

He was a trickster, who could easily dupe any getup and can dupe anyone’s signature, he was so good at this that he even posed as India’s president several times and conducted some very high level frauds. Now comes his highlight frauds, this guy went on to sell Taj Mahal three times, red fort twice and even sold the Rashtrapati Bhavan once, by posing as top Govt officials, cheating the foreigners with duplicate signs and stamps. He didn’t leave the business magnets either, he even forged the signature of Dhirubhai Ambani.

To add more spice to the story, let’s look at who he was before becoming a conman, he must know the holes in the Indian judicial system to have done such high levels of fraud. Some might have guessed already, yes he was a lawyer ! This is when he found his Ikigai ( LOL kidding!) He was good at forging others’ signatures. He once said, “I can clear all loans in our country, and make other countries pay debt to us, if I’m given a chance”! As already said, he was never successfully made to complete his jail sentence, and has the record of highest number of escapes too under his belt.

It’s like having hundreds of mysteries into a story, he has been the biggest fraud, the most wanted trickster, who has also never been captured literally. But just like any other bollywood story of a thug, his story also has another side to it- the coin’s other side. When he was not hiding or running from police, he would spend time in his village and give away his loot to the needy- yes he was a Robinhood in his village. His village still loves him so much that they even planned to install his statue in the town.

“In 1992, Natwarlal visited Siwan town and I tried to see him, but could not because of the huge crowd,” one of his villagers had revealed his grief in 2011.

Such stories do exist! In fact what I have told you is just a small piece of this man’s life, just google Natwarlal and I wouldn’t be shocked if you find hundred new stories or frauds by him. It was all fun and interesting to read about this man and others like him until this old tamil saying came to my mind,

ஏமாறுபவர்கள் இருக்கும் வரை, ஏமாற்றுபவர்கள் இருந்துக் கொண்டேதான் இருப்பார்கள்

As long as there are people who can be fooled or cheat easily, cheaters will remain !
